Discover the charm of the rustic cottage, Al Ladino, a luxury private villa close to Nerja (Málaga)

Up a gentle hill, around a couple of twisty bends and known only to a handful of locals. Al Ladino is a terracotta roofed ‘casa de campo’, sitting above the area’s last protected pine forest. Come here to experience the privacy, the calmness and the spectacular views.  No neighbours to get in the way, just magical views to the Sierra Almijara and the Mediterranean.

This is a hillside sanctuary, close to nature with the charm of ‘the campo’ and blessed with unimaginable views that never fail to captivate. Yet civilisation is not far. Five minutes away is Nerja, a former fishing village, now a bustling colourful  seaside resort with shops, restaurants and a weekly market. And proper sandy beaches, the closest is a little more than a kilometre.

Just imagine ...

…after your morning’s dip, watch the mist disperse from the mountain peaks and then relax on the patio as you ease yourself into the day.  This is a privileged place where the air is pure, the birds sing and the trees rustle in the light breeze. Sunshine and warmth is never far away. Welcome to ‘la vida tranquila’, the peaceful life. And then, as darkness falls, magical lighting illuminates the pool & patio and Nerja twinkles below. Capture the moment and raise your glass to the stars. ¡Bienvenidos!

More than 20 years ago we chanced upon here while looking for a special place to call home. We were magnetically drawn to Al Ladino, its unimaginable views and overflowing charm. A bolthole like no other, a haven to recuperate from life’s manic rush.

Going back in time, Al Ladino was created as a humble caseta/small cottage next to a farmhouse.  Like so much built in the countryside it didn’t have a planning licence. Years later we remedied that and using local stone and restored timbers we recreated the ‘authentic Spanish country cortijo’ with ‘un estilo tradicional’.  If you lust for the flavour of the old ‘real Spain’ here you may quench your thirst for nostalgia amid the old black and white photos of local life on the walls, the farmhouse kitchen, the antiques and curiosities.

The maintenance team of four is dedicated to keeping this home pristine, polishing the terracotta floors, bringing fresh flowers from the garden, sweeping out la lavanderia (the laundry room), the sun patios and all those hidden corners.  Where do I buy the best local wine?  What about organic fruit & vegetables?  Where can we walk for a taste of  ‘authentic old world Spain?  Where is there a flamenco show? Can we get the flamenco dancers to come to the house for a private show?  We usually have the answers!  ‘nada es desmasiado pedir – nothing too much to ask.  Come look around and discover with us this two bedroom cottage with heart stopping views over Nerja.

You may never want to leave Al Ladino but if you do, the former fishing village of Nerja is 25 minutes on foot along the beach or 5 minutes by taxi.  The iconic centre of town, the ‘Balcon de Europa’ stretched out into the sea. Either side and below are compact coves where the waves lap the shore. There’s Playa de Salon and neighbouring Playa de Calahonda both peaceful and intimate. Nerja is ‘el lugar más encantador’, an enchanting place indeed it occupies a special place in the affections of Spañards. They remember with nostalgia that Nerja was the setting for a 19 part television serial in the early 1980s called ‘Verano Azul’.   Then, a group of teens travelled south. The fisherman and other characters they met along the way characterised the optimism and romance of the time and Nerja was at the centre of it.  In this grand pueblo, walk the cobbled streets, buy handcrafted souvenirs, enjoy the street artists and musicians while you choose your tapas from grilled aubergine, fried boquerones, chorizo and manchego cheese. Your glass of rioja will likely not be too far from your lips.

¡We’re going to make you feel welcome.  ‘Bienvenidos’ to Al Ladino !

Nerja enjoys a warm year round climate which is often said to be ‘el mejor clima de europa’, the best on the continent.

Summers reach towards the mid  30s while spring and autumn are warm and sunny.

There is good quality daylight and sun in Winter, for sunbathing, dining out, walking, exercising with cycling, tennis & golf.  It’s surprise that so many europeans have made Nerja their winter home.
